Happy New Year Adventurer! I hope yours is off to a great start. Unfortunately, mine so far has left me with a cold and sinus infection which started on the last day of the year. While being sick will always suck, everything does have a silver lining as the illness has shown me just how truly kind people are and has forced me to stay in a place I very much enjoy.
When I wrote up my diary entry at the start of December, my plans were to leave Iquitos and head to Cusco to visit Machu Picchu. A week later, I changed my plans and was meant to go to Arequipa instead, but that has also been cancelled due to my feeling unwell. Instead, I have extended my stay in Iquitos for the fourth time. This is a truly unique city and the family which operates the hostel I am staying at is incredible. It is hard to believe I did not even know this place even existed until a few months back.
Truly the best part of traveling the world alone is the ease in meeting other people along the journey. We are never truly alone as there are always like-minded people also enjoying the solo travel experience. Locals in each of my destinations have continuously shown the true warmth of the human race as well.
I do need to leave here by the end of this month as my 90 days allowance in Peru comes to an end. The next country will be Chile where I will be headed to the southernmost tip of the continent. I am excited to be able to share those experiences with you over the next couple of months. I hope you have a happy, healthy and safe new year.
